Wildlife

The unspoiled Kintyre Peninsula is a haven for rare wildlife, with some 400 species of birds. Many of these can be viewed from the hotel, with our private beach currently boasting its own pair of otters. Residential wildlife tours, with expert guides, are organised throughout the season.

Walking

South Kintyre is a walker's paradise. For breathtaking views of the sea, then you can choose one of the beach side walks, over the golden sands, or for the more adventurous try a cliff top path. Information on set visitor routes are available at the hotel, with varying degrees of duration and exertion. The walk across the causeway to the famous painted caves of Davaar Island is definitely a memorable trip. The area boasts many hill footpaths, ancient monuments, burial grounds and caves, with plenty to explore.

Cycling

Why not bring your bike. The roads are almost traffic free and are an ideal way to explore the surrounding countryside. There are also forest roads to take you off the beaten track.

Island Hopping

The Hunting Lodge is ideally situated as a base for island hopping to Islay, Jura, Gigha, Arran, Bute and Colonsay. Each island has its own unique history and scenery and most are suitable for day drips.

Beautiful Gigha (derived from the Norse for 'God's Island', is only a 20 minute roll-on roll-off ferry journey from Tayinloan, less than 10 minutes from the hotel. The island has beautiful bays, stunning views and a huge variety of bird life. It is also home of the world famous Achamore Gardens - over 50 acres of rare and unusual plants surrounded by picturesque woodland. Similarly ferries for Colonsay, Jura and Islay leave from Kennacraig, a short drive north of here.

A visit to rugged Jura or picturesque, Islay, with its seven world-famous distilleries, is definitely to be recommended. It is well worth coinciding your visit with Islay's annual Whisky festival, to experience excellent seafood washed down by the finest of malts. Likewise Arran hosts a celebrated folk festival, and is a mere 30 min ferry sail Claonaig on Kintyre. Arran is often described as 'Scotland in Miniature' and has a host of historic attractions to interest visitors.
